Project Overview
This project was created for the Maryland SkillsUSA T-Shirt Design Competition. The challenge was to design a T-shirt that represented the state of Maryland while working within a four-color limitation and promoting the SkillsUSA theme of bringing people together. My final design, featuring several official Maryland state symbols aboard the Skipjack, was selected as the winning entry.
Research & Concept Development
When I began the SkillsUSA T-shirt design project, I first focused on understanding the competition requirements. One of the key specifications was that the design could use only four colors in addition to the color of the T-shirt itself. The design also needed to visually represent the state of Maryland while communicating the theme of bringing people together.
To begin my research, I reviewed previous Maryland SkillsUSA T-shirt designs to gain inspiration and better understand how past designers approached the challenge. I then researched official Maryland state symbols, including the Skipjack (the state boat), the Baltimore Oriole (the state bird), the Diamondback Terrapin (the state reptile), and the blue crab (the state crustacean).
As I developed my concept, I wanted to emphasize the idea of unity and community. I believed that combining several recognizable Maryland symbols into a single composition would effectively communicate the theme of bringing people together. This inspired the concept of the Oriole, Terrapin, and blue crab traveling together aboard the Skipjack on their journey to SkillsUSA. By bringing these iconic Maryland symbols together, the design celebrates both the state’s unique identity and the strong sense of connection and collaboration that SkillsUSA encourages among its members.
Design Challenges
One of the biggest challenges of this project was creating a visually engaging design while working within the competition’s four-color limitation. This constraint required me to simplify the illustrations and use color strategically to maintain clarity, visual impact, and printability. I carefully balanced detail and simplicity to ensure the final design would be effective as a screen-printed T-shirt.
Design Decisions
I chose the Skipjack as the central element because it is one of Maryland’s most recognizable state symbols and provided a natural way to unite the other state icons within a single composition. The Baltimore Oriole, Diamondback Terrapin, and blue crab were placed aboard the vessel to symbolize individuals coming together through SkillsUSA. The composition creates a sense of movement and unity while reinforcing the organization’s mission of collaboration, leadership, and community.

Reflection
This project strengthened my ability to translate a broad theme into a clear visual concept while working within strict design and production requirements. Through research, concept development, and refinement, I learned how symbolism, composition, and color can work together to communicate a message effectively. Being selected as the winning design reinforced the value of thoughtful research, strong visual storytelling, and designing with both creativity and production constraints in mind.
