The Challenge
The goal of this project was to create a visually engaging editorial publication that balances long-form written content with compelling imagery. The magazine needed to appeal to a niche audience while maintaining a professional design aesthetic typically found in contemporary lifestyle and culture publications.
A primary challenge was organizing a variety of content types—including interviews, historical features, and industry commentary—into a cohesive publication with a clear visual hierarchy and consistent reading experience.
Design Process
The publication was developed using a structured grid system that established consistency across articles while allowing flexibility for unique page compositions. Typography played a central role in the design process, with carefully selected typefaces, pull quotes, and headline treatments used to guide readers through each story.
Using Adobe InDesign, I designed the magazine’s layout, established typographic hierarchies, and created page templates that maintained visual consistency throughout the publication. Adobe Photoshop was used to edit and optimize photography, ensuring images integrated seamlessly with the editorial content.
Special attention was given to balancing text and imagery, creating dynamic spreads that maintain readability while encouraging exploration of the content.
Solution
The final magazine features clean layouts, strong typographic structure, and thoughtful image placement that support the publication’s storytelling goals. Elements such as pull quotes, full-spread imagery, feature article layouts, and a visually organized table of contents help create an engaging and professional reader experience.
The publication successfully presents a wide range of doll-related topics while maintaining a cohesive visual identity that reflects both the artistic and historical nature of the subject matter.
Outcome
Doll Digest demonstrates my ability to develop a complete editorial publication from concept through production. The project showcases skills in publication design, typography, visual hierarchy, image editing, and long-form content organization.
By combining thoughtful layouts with strong editorial storytelling, the magazine creates an engaging reading experience while effectively communicating information to its audience.
